Artist’s Statement

The versatility and transparency of watercolor captured my imagination early on. The vibrancy of colors and the play of light and shadows continue to fascinate me regardless of the subjects. Most, but not all, of my paintings are landscapes. The shapes, values and colors I see in buildings and landscapes speak to me of the solidarity and hard work of the people who inhabit and care for them. Having grown up in a rural area adds a sense of comfort and familiarity, and awakens memories of place and people as I paint. Sometimes I paint on location, but most often my photos and memory of the light and mood of the specific place furnish the inspiration and create the painting. Expressing what I see and feel often helps me look beyond the painting.

Art Instruction

I came to painting late in life following retirement as an educator, researcher and administrator in higher education. My art instruction has been within the last 9 years.
I have taken classes in drawing, pen and ink, pastel and watercolor from Judy Meyler, Jack Stone, Anne Kiefaber, Ron Campbell, Ron Bauer, Ron Groh, Juanita Patrum, James Shuler, Alexis Lavine, and Jo Leeds. I have taken watercolor workshops from Tony Couch, Alexis Lavine, Sue Pollins, Leslye Bloom, Sterling Edwards, Linda Kemp, and Kate Worm.
