Artist Bio

I was born and raised in a family of 9 noisy kids in a small town near Buffalo, New York. My mother was an art teacher and a gifted painter; my father was a talented musician and high school music teacher. I messed around with art and music my whole life. I filled notebooks with drawings and did my first paintings at the age of 10. I was a good student, graduating 9th in my high school class of 250, singing in the choir and playing in the band and orchestra, but rarely taking time for art classes. I developed a portfolio of art work on my own, and was accepted into art school.

In college I finally got to study art formally – loving my drawing, painting, ceramics, photography and design classes. I earned a bachelor’s degree in art education from Buffalo State, and began teaching elementary art for the Rochester Public Schools. Soon I had moved to Michigan with my husband and 1-year-old daughter where I attended night school at Michigan State, taking printmaking: lithography, etching and silkscreen.

At a few small summer art shows I experienced the excitement of selling my art for the first time. For many years I worked as a teacher, writer and illustrator in Michigan. When I took up watercolor and acrylic painting in 2000 I discovered the flow of the colors and how the medium allowed so much expression. I joined an active artist guild and continued to study drawing and painting. I began exhibiting my work seriously in 2004.

When we moved to Durham the following year, I continued to study watercolor and show my work in North Carolina. I established a professional website and currently have my own studio, teach weekly painting classes, and grow as an artist everyday.
